Perpétua almost faints when she learns that Inácio was injured. Damiana threatens Rosário, who takes ointments to Estevão. Mariana cries over Corte Real’s death. Manuela and Perpétua travel with Chico Mascate. Mariana is afraid of being left in a convent, but Maria tells her that they’re only going to visit Rosário. Bento Manuel meets with Mena Barreto. Rosário faints when Estevão says he was killed by Corte Real in an ambush to get back at her father.The soldiers walk in their torn uniforms, weary and hungry. Anita asks Barbara to teach her how to write. Mariana escapes to meet with João Gutierrez, but Maria takes her home by the hair and despairs that her daughter is pregnant. Estevão guarantees Rosário that his love for her is stronger than death. Manuela gives Garibaldi a poncho as a gift. The army arrives in São José do Norte. Rosário asks Damiana to forgive her and swears to Estevão that she’s going to get him out of her heart without having to become a nun. Garibaldi and his men enter the city and open the gate for the troops. The fight is hard-fought in the city. Crescêncio says that the wharf is already taken.
João Gutierrez tries to convince Mariana to escape with him through the window, but Maria shoots him, without, however, wounding him. Bento Gonçalves and Garibaldi try to keep the soldiers from looting the houses. The Imperials counterattack, invade the fort, and wound Garibaldi. Manuela takes care of Garibaldi. Bento Gonçalves orders a withdrawal so that he doesn’t have to kill more civilians. Maria shutters all the windows to Mariana’s bedroom, which makes her cry in desperation.
